Short answer
Many law firms in South Tyrol live on referrals. New clients, however, often search online: on Google, on Google Maps and in AI answers, mostly in Italian and with the practice area in the search. What gets found and cited is often the firm that answers exactly that question on a page of its own, in German and Italian.
How do people in South Tyrol look for a lawyer, and what do they find? In October 2026 Rankprofi analysed search data for Italy, reviewed 21 law firm websites in Bolzano and asked ChatGPT and Google eight typical client questions. In this Italian province German and Italian are both in everyday use, so firms are searched for in two languages.
The key findings at a glance
- Most searches are in Italian. The eight Italian terms we measured for a lawyer in Bolzano, Merano and Brunico add up to about 420 searches a month, the six German ones to about 80.
- For practice area plus town, a directory often ranks first. For "avvocato divorzista bolzano" (divorce lawyer Bolzano) and "avvocato penalista bolzano" (criminal lawyer Bolzano), position 1 on Google Italy was a lawyer directory.
- Bilingual, yes; practice-area pages, only about half. Of 21 Bolzano law firm websites we reviewed, 17 are in German and Italian, but only 11 have a dedicated page for each practice area.
- Articles by named lawyers are almost absent. Only 1 of the 21 websites shows articles under a lawyer's name, the newest from 2021.
- AI answers name firms: in our test, every time. All 34 AI answers to our eight questions named at least one law firm.
- The page that answers the exact question is often the one cited. For questions about one practice area in Bolzano, 13 of 20 sources cited by ChatGPT were a firm's matching practice-area page. For Merano, none of 52 cited sources was a practice-area page of a Merano firm.

The problem: referrals are valuable, but they are not a system
If new instructions come mainly through referrals, that speaks for the quality of the work. But referrals can't be planned, steered towards one practice area or scaled up when a new partner is building one.
So how does someone find you who knows no one who knows you? A business owner in Bolzano with a construction-contract dispute, a woman in Merano looking for a bilingual lawyer for her separation, an heir from Bavaria with a flat in Brixen: many ask Google first, some ask an AI.
How do clients search for a lawyer in South Tyrol?
People looking for a lawyer they don't know type the problem and the town, mostly in Italian.
Searches for lawyers in South Tyrol, estimated searches per month
| Italian | Searches/month | German | Searches/month |
|---|---|---|---|
| avvocato bolzano | 100 | rechtsanwalt bozen | 20 |
| avvocati bolzano | 80 | rechtsanwalt meran | 20 |
| studio legale bolzano | 60 | anwalt bozen | 10 |
| avvocato divorzista bolzano | 50 | anwalt meran | 10 |
| avvocato brunico | 50 | anwalt bruneck | 10 |
| avvocato penalista bolzano | 30 | anwalt südtirol | 10 |
| avvocato del lavoro bolzano | 30 | ||
| avvocato merano | 20 | ||
| around 420 in total | around 80 in total |
Source: Ahrefs, search volume Italy, 5 October 2026. Rounded estimates; with numbers this small, the ratio matters. Search volume shows demand, not enquiries. The table shows the language of the search, not of the searcher. English searches were not measured.

Why it matters: many German speakers here also search in Italian, often naming the practice area. And terms don't translate one to one: "avvocato divorzista bolzano" has about 50 searches a month, its German equivalent "scheidungsanwalt bozen" none that Ahrefs can measure.
What a firm should do: name practice areas the way clients search for them in each language, and write each version in its own right.
What do Bolzano law firm websites show – and what is missing?
Review: 21 law firm websites in Bolzano
| What we checked | Result |
|---|---|
| Dedicated page for individual practice areas | 11 of 21 |
| Practice areas only listed on one page | 9 of 21 (1 unclear) |
| Articles under the name of a lawyer | 1 of 21 (3 unclear), newest entry from 2021 |
| Website in German and Italian | 17 of 21 (2 Italian only, 2 unclear) |
Source: Rankprofi review, October 2026; 21 reachable law firm websites with a Bolzano address, anonymised, not a full census (Methodology). The figures say nothing about the quality of the legal work.

Most of the websites are bilingual. What is missing is depth: on 9 of 21, "family law" is just a word in a list.
Directories fill that gap. Page one for "avvocato divorzista bolzano" showed 4 lawyer directories, 4 firm practice-area pages and 1 homepage, with a directory first; so did "avvocato penalista bolzano" (Ahrefs, search results Italy, October 2026).

Why it matters: where a firm's own website doesn't answer the question, a directory does, showing several firms side by side.
What a firm should do: turn the list into separate practice-area pages, starting with the area that matters most.

What may a law firm advertise in Italy?
In short: information yes, self-promotion no. In Italy, and therefore in South Tyrol, this is governed mainly by Article 35 of the Codice deontologico forense, the Italian code of professional conduct for lawyers (Article 35 as amended in 2016):
- Lawyers may give information about their professional activity by any means, including their website, Google profile and expert articles. The standards are truthfulness, correctness, transparency, secrecy and confidentiality.
- Comparative information about other lawyers is not allowed, nor is information that is ambiguous, misleading, denigrating or sensational.
- The professional title, the name of the firm and the bar association must be stated.
- Client names are not given.
- Every communication must respect the dignity and standing of the profession.
A page explaining how a consensual separation works in Italy is information; "We'll win your case" or "the best employment law firm in Bolzano" is not. If in doubt, check with the Bolzano Bar Association first. How SEO and GEO for law firms work within these limits is described on our industry page.
Source and date: Article 35, Codice deontologico forense, compared by Rankprofi with the official text of the Consiglio Nazionale Forense (in force since 7 April 2026; Article 35 last amended in 2016). A summary, not a lawyer's review and not legal advice.
Four routes to new clients compared
Law firm marketing, legal marketing or marketing for lawyers: what counts is whether a route reaches people searching now, keeps working when you stop paying, and shows which instruction it brought.
| Route | Examples | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoping | referrals | trust is already there | not plannable, can't be steered |
| Buying | lawyer directories, Google Ads | visible straight away for a specific search | ends with the budget; directories show several firms side by side |
| Interrupting | newspaper ads, sponsorship | makes the name known | mostly reaches people with no current need; instructions hard to trace |
| Owning | practice-area pages, Google profile, named articles | lasts as long as it is maintained; source of enquiries measurable | takes time to build; not guaranteed |
Google Ads captures existing demand immediately, for example for a new practice area. It doesn't build visibility that lasts, and that isn't its job.
Practice-area pages and articles by named lawyers
Before calling, a client wants to know: does this firm do exactly this, who handles it, how does it work? A practice-area page answers that for one topic, in German and Italian, with the responsible lawyer, typical questions and the next step.
Example from our test: one page, named four times
A Bolzano firm otherwise only lists its practice areas, but has a dedicated, detailed page on inheritance law. When we asked for an inheritance lawyer in Bolzano, it was named in 4 of 5 answers, in ChatGPT and in Google's AI Mode, each time via that page.
Source: Rankprofi AI test, 5 October 2026 (Methodology). A single case shows what is possible, not what is guaranteed.
The same thinking applies to articles under a lawyer's name. An article "Separation in Italy: how does a consensual separation work?" by a named lawyer shows who handles the topic. In our review only one of 21 firms did this, most recently in 2021.

What a firm should do: start with the most important practice area: one page in both languages, plus named articles on the most frequent questions.
Google Business Profile and reviews
The Google Business Profile is the listing on Google Maps and next to the search results. For searches such as "anwalt bozen" (lawyer Bolzano), Google shows these listings at the top in a map box (Ahrefs, search results Italy, October 2026).
A well-kept profile has the right categories, a bilingual description, current photos and a link to the website. For reviews, professional rules and confidentiality apply: reply factually, without details of the matter.
Note from our test: about one in two links cited by Google's AI Mode led to a firm's homepage, once via the website link in the Google profile. That suggests Google also draws on the profile; it is not proven.
How do law firms get named in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?
In short: in our test, for questions about one practice area, ChatGPT often cited exactly the firm page that answered that question. There is no guarantee.
Our test: eight typical client questions, asked twice
We asked ChatGPT (with web search) and Google in AI Mode eight questions, four in German and four in Italian, such as "Mi serve un avvocato del lavoro a Bolzano, chi mi consigli?" (I need an employment lawyer in Bolzano, who do you recommend?).
| What we observed | Result |
|---|---|
| Answers without a single firm name | 0 of 34 |
| ChatGPT, questions about one practice area in Bolzano: the source was a firm's matching practice-area page | 13 of 20 sources |
| Google AI Mode: the source was a practice-area page / a homepage | about one in four / about one in two |
| Merano: practice-area pages of Merano firms among the sources | 0 of 52 |
| Firms from the first run named again about 40 minutes later | about 6 in 10 |
Source: Rankprofi AI test, 5 October 2026 (Methodology). Not a representative sample; AI answers change constantly. Being named is not being recommended, and it says nothing about instructions.
- AI names names. A firm that doesn't appear leaves the space to others.
- Names change, page types stay. After about 40 minutes, about four in ten names were different. The kind of page cited stayed the same: in ChatGPT often the practice-area page, in Google a mix of practice-area pages and homepages.
- Merano is an open door. For Merano, ChatGPT and Google found hardly any firm pages on a specific legal question and fell back on homepages and directories.
What a firm should do: have a page for every typical client question and check what AI answers. More in our article on how ChatGPT and other AI answers find sources.
SEO, local search and GEO: three surfaces, one foundation
- SEO: visibility in regular Google Search, for example with your own employment law page for "avvocato del lavoro bolzano".
- Local search (local SEO): visibility on Google Maps and in the map box, mainly through the Google Business Profile. More: local SEO.
- GEO (generative engine optimisation): visibility and citation in AI answers such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode or Perplexity. More: GEO and AI visibility.
These aren't separate projects but one foundation: pages that answer a specific question; experts identifiable by name; consistent firm name, address and practice areas everywhere; mentions on other reputable websites; and a website that is technically easy to reach.
Since August 2026 ChatGPT has shown ads in Italy too, labelled and kept separate from the answer. Being cited as a source in the answer itself can't be bought.

Where should a South Tyrol law firm start?
Based on the data above, this is the order we would suggest:
| Priority | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Record where every enquiry came from | Costs nothing; without it nothing can be assessed |
| 2 | A page for the most important practice area, in Italian and German, each written in its own right | Only 11 of 21 websites have such pages; ChatGPT cited this type of page 13 times out of 20 |
| 3 | Complete, bilingual Google Business Profile | Map box at the top for "anwalt bozen" |
| 4 | Articles by named lawyers | 1 of 21 websites, most recently 2021 |
| 5 | Reviews within the professional rules | Shown next to the firm's name in the profile (not measured) |
| 6 | Further practice areas on the same pattern | Directories lead for practice area + town; Merano 0 of 52 |
| 7 | Check regularly what AI answers | Names changed within an hour |
| in parallel | Google Ads when enquiries are needed now | Captures demand immediately, ends with the budget |
How to tell after 90 days whether it's working
The basis is the list from priority 1: referral, Google, Google Maps, website, directory, AI, ad, "don't know". Plus three figures you can see yourself:
- In the Google Business Profile: calls, direction requests and website clicks per month (Google help).
- In Google Search Console: how often your website appears for searches without your firm's name, such as "avvocato divorzista bolzano".
- In your website statistics: visits from AI answers. ChatGPT adds "utm_source=chatgpt.com" to its links, so these visits can be analysed separately. We have published how we measure AI visibility.
In the end, count enquiries, not clicks.
Methodology and limitations
Search data. Ahrefs, Italy database, 5 October 2026: terms combining lawyer or law firm with a South Tyrol town, in Italian and German. 14 had measurable volume; others, such as "kanzlei bozen" or "scheidungsanwalt bozen", had none. English-language searches were not included. Search results: latest Ahrefs snapshot for Italy, pulled the same day.
Website review. A web search found 25 law firm websites with a Bolzano address; 21 were reachable. We checked language versions, dedicated practice-area pages and articles under an author's name. The pages were read on 1 October 2026 with an AI-assisted tool; 6 of the 21 sites were re-checked in a normal browser on 5 October 2026 (5 matched, 1 borderline). Unclear cases are reported as such.
AI test. Eight questions on 5 October 2026, each on a different practice area: four in German, four in Italian; five about Bolzano, two about Merano, one about South Tyrol. ChatGPT with web search and Google AI Mode answered each question twice, about 40 minutes apart; Perplexity answered two: 34 answers in total. Logged out, new chat per question, Google with its location set to South Tyrol (Italian IP address via VPN).
Limitations. The results show a direction and don't apply to every firm in South Tyrol; two firms often named by AI are not in the review. We wrote the questions, and AI answers change constantly. No figure says anything about enquiries or instructions.
Do it yourself or work with an agency?
An enquiry list, the Google profile, a first practice-area page: a firm can start on these itself. Harder are choosing which practice areas to build, a bilingual website that is more than a translation, and seeing how AI views the firm.
If you are assessing an agency, ask these five questions:
- Can you show me search data from South Tyrol, not Germany, in German and in Italian?
- How will we judge after 90 days whether it works – in enquiries, not clicks?
- How do you find out whether and how my firm appears in AI answers today?
- What exactly will you do with my Google profile and reviews, within the professional rules?
- What happens to my visibility if we stop working together – does it belong to me?
Rankprofi is an agency for SEO and GEO based in South Tyrol. We work for companies in the construction, interior design and hotel industries, in German, Italian and English, with search data from South Tyrol and Trentino. We collected the data in this article ourselves. If requested, our partner Alpin Ads takes care of paid campaigns.
We don't state a flat price – ask us. The scope depends on competition, number of locations, the state of the website and the German and Italian coverage needed, among other things. It always starts with a free analysis, followed by a concrete offer.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, as factual information. Under Article 35 of the Codice deontologico forense, Italy's code of professional conduct for lawyers, lawyers may give information about their activity by any means, provided it is true, correct and transparent. Comparative, misleading or sensational information is not allowed, and client names are not given. This applies in South Tyrol as anywhere in Italy; if in doubt, check with the Bolzano Bar Association. This answer is not legal advice.
Mostly in Italian and by practice area and town, for example "avvocato divorzista bolzano" (divorce lawyer Bolzano). The eight Italian search terms we measured add up to about 420 searches a month, the six German ones to about 80 (Ahrefs, search volume Italy, October 2026). Some people now also ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT.
If a firm wants to reach clients from both language groups, yes. Italian searches clearly dominate, but part of the clientele searches in German. Of the 21 Bolzano firm websites we reviewed, 17 were in both languages (October 2026).
Often not, because people search with different terms in each language. "avvocato divorzista bolzano" has about 50 searches a month, while its German equivalent "scheidungsanwalt bozen" has none that Ahrefs can measure (October 2026). Each version should start from the terms clients actually use in that language.
There is no guarantee. In our test with eight typical client questions (5 October 2026), AI named law firms in every answer, but the names changed between two runs. For questions about one practice area in Bolzano, ChatGPT cited a firm's matching practice-area page in 13 of 20 cases. You can check your own firm by asking the AI the questions your clients ask.
There is no flat price. The effort depends on how many practice areas and offices should become visible, the state of the website, the strength of competition and whether German and Italian are covered. It can only be judged seriously after looking at today's visibility.
Google Ads works immediately, as long as the campaign runs. Your own visibility on Google and in AI answers builds up over months. How fast depends on the starting point, competition in the practice area and maintenance. Nobody can seriously promise fixed deadlines.
